Goal(s)

The knowledge of the structure of matter is most often a prerequisite for understanding its properties. X-ray, neutron or elecron scattering can be used in order to investigate the structure of materials. The course is an introduction. It will focuse on perfect crystal structure and X-ray scattering.

The two main objectives of the course are that students are able to describe any crystal structure and to determine a crystal structure from the analysis of its X-ray diffraction pattern.

Content(s)

Summary
1/ Introduction
2/ Direct and recirocal lattices, lattice classification
3/Study of crystal symmetries, space groups, point groups
4/ X-ray scattering
5/ Experimental methods

Chapters 2 and 3 deal with geometrical crystallography. The importance of the symmetry of crystals will be emphasized. Examples will be analyzed only from a structural point of view. Questions about the origin of a given structure or chemical bonding are out of the scope of the lectures.
Chapters 4 and 5 on X ray scattering are illustrated by tutorials on relevant examples of crystal structure determination.
