Goals

This course presents the basic tools in image and video compression. The first part is dedicated to lossless compression algorithms that is entropic coding, variable lenght coding, dictionnary coding. The second part is dedicated to lossy compression algorithms. The following methods are explained: scalar and vectorial quantization, Discrete Cosine Transform, wavelet transform. Then the main standards such as JPEG, MEPG and H26x are presented.
