Goal(s)

Introduce the basic notions of the structure of matter (crystallography, chemical bonds and structural defects) and establish the relationship between the different material properties and their structure.

Materials properties and structure
Chapter 1 : Introduction and recalls on chemical bonding (covalent, ionic, metallic, Van der Waals and Hydrogen)
Chapter 2: Chemical bonding and properties of materials (mechanical, thermal, elastic, electronic,…)
Chapter 3: Crystallography (Bravais lattices, solid structures, reciprocal space, X-ray diffraction, Electron diffraction)
Chapter 4 : Structural defects (vacancies, interstitials, dislocations, stacking faults, twins, precipitates,...) and phase diagrams.



Prerequisites

None.

Test

One written (DS) exam (2 h) and Possible Intermediate evaluations (QCM).



N1=90%DS + 10%QCM
