Goal(s)
This course presents an introduction to the area of digital communication techniques and networks.
It gives an overview of the fundamentals of information theory and digital communication techniques.
The objective is also to get students familiar with network concepts.It also teaches a practical use of basic Internet observation tools as well as the mechanisms of Internet & mobile services (e-mail, www, mobile access …).
Content(s)
The course is divided in different parts :
- digital communication techniques : line codes and modulations, digital communication chain elements
- multiple access techniques, mobile access networks (GSM, UMTS, LTE ...) and WLAN
- information theory
- general networking concepts : network architecture, layering, protocols and basic functions
- network applications: WWW, DNS, e-mail...

Observation tools (Wireshark, traceroute…)
Directory services (DNS, whois)
E-mail protocols
Configuring a WWW server with restricted access
