Goal(s)

The scope of this series of labworks sessions is the study of links between the elaboration of a material (polymers, ceramics or metallic alloys) and the resulting microstructural properties.
This module consists of seven 4h-sessions on imposed subjects. This labworks relie on various experimental tools for characterizing mechanical, optical and physicochemical properties.

Eight sessions of labworks:

  1. Solidification of aluminium alloys : Al-SI-Mg
  2. Carburizing treatment of a steel
  3. Brittle materials fracture : Weibull model, measurement of fracture toughness
  4. Electrical and optical characterisations of III-V semiconductors
  5. Failure of thin films : the electromigration case
  6. Polymers synthesis
  7. Polymers cristallisation
  8. Polymer Tensile Test


Prerequisites

General background in cristallography, tensile test and ductile/brittle fracture.
General skills with binary diagrams, and solidication process.

Test

Students will write one report per group on each of the eight subjects. The deadline to transmit the report to the teacher in charge of the subject is one week after the session. You can transmit your report either by asking other students to give it for you, if you are located in other rooms than those on campus, either by giving it hand to hand or by using the mail box or e-mail box of your teacher.
