Summary

The "Materials approach": from design to end of life in a sustainable development context
 
1 - Design: materials selection, new materials, material savings, lighter weight, environmental constraints

2 - Elaboration: control of the structure and microstructures, innovative processes (3D printing, etc...).

3 - Transformation: shaping, implementation

4 - Properties: physical, physico-chemical, mechanical, durability

5 - Recycling: recycling tolerant materials, associated processes

The Materials Science and Engineering program trains engineers capable of understanding the various scientific and technological problems linked to the manufacture and use of materials and of proposing solutions in a context of sustainable development.

Entry requirements

  • To be admitted into Year 1 (at two years of post-secondary study), students must have completed two years of preparatory courses (science-track or Institute of Technology common preparatory program) or have earned an undergraduate degree from a university (in France, mainly DUT or L2).
  • Admissions on qualifications to the 2nd year (France and abroad)
  • Exchange students. Students with a bachelor in Materials Science for the Materials Science and Engineering Program

Semester 9 can be completed with an interdisciplinary program that concerns all majors:

It can also be completed in the program specific to Phelma:

Semester 10

Master thesis (30 ECTS credits)

The final semester of the Grenoble INP - Phelma engineering course is exclusively dedicated to the End of Studies Project.

This occurs from February to June, either overseas or in France, in a research laboratory or in industry. This allows students to use the methods and knowledge they have acquired in a professional environment. They will experience engineering working methods, learn how to manage a project and develop their autonomy and initiative.

The End of Studies Project also develops their sense of responsibility by submitting them to a demand for results within a pre-determined time frame. The student engineer is required to produce a report and take a viva on their project.

Board of examiners

Each semester is worth 30 ECTS credits, spread out over the different courses completed. Students must obtain a grade of at least 10/20 in each course to obtain the credits.
