Phelma responds to major issues in society

Energy, micro and nano-technologies, information technology, innovative materials, biomedical engineering, the environment and sustainable development - Phelma intends to meet the major issues facing society.

The technological advances made in physics, materials and Information technology have never been as dramatic as they are today

Engineers from Phelma design new sources of energy and energy technologies (nuclear, photovoltaic and fuel cell) that are safer and more efficient in order to meet the needs of the population. They design the electronic components of the future for our computers and mobile phones, and work to ensure that they are manufactured from materials that cause less pollution. They are inventing algorithms for signal processing that will make it possible to save battery power and will have ever increasing autonomy. They are developing innovative materials that are lighter and stronger for our future transport systems. They are writing programs to guarantee the security of IT systems. They are perfecting biological laboratories on chips, a genuine miniaturised analysis centre, etc.

Conscientious and responsible engineers

When training the engineers who will meet the challenges of technological innovation, Phelma not only relies on the strength and diversity of its curriculum but also on the values of responsibility and ethics that are passed on to its students. Regardless of the course that students take, teaching at the school stresses concepts specific to sustainable development: energy, resource management, consumption and responsibility.

In synergy with the world of research

Closely following developments in technology

Phelma uses the skills of the school's 170 research lecturers to train the researchers who will meet the challenges of technological innovation. The school also calls on more than 250 outside speakers from the world of industry and research who provide far more than their scientific skills and techniques: their contribution facilitates contact with students seeking answers to their questions about career plans.

Research and training

Almost the entire teaching body comes from the eleven partner laboratories that are attached to the major national research organisations (CNRS, CEA, INRIA, etc.). The wealth and diversity of research areas reflect the broad spectrum of the disciplines that are taught.

Careers in research

The research component at Phelma is amongst the highest of all the engineering schools in France. In 2016, nearly 25% of engineering graduates embarked on obtaining a PhD.

Engineer / PhD: a specialised and sought-after profile

The school offers around ten specialist areas. Research topics may be applied in partnership with industry or fundamental research schemes in research laboratories.

Unique opportunities for obtaining a PhD: a unique Research / Training / Industry synergy

  • 10 research masters
  • 13 support laboratories
  • Major national research institutes of international renown: CNRS, CEA, INRIA, etc.
  •  Major organisations (ESRF, ILL, etc.)
  • Phelma is the only academic institution on the Minatec innovation campus in micro nano-technologies.
