Goal(s)

Give students a general knowledge on the physical properties of materials at low temperature (metals, insulators, superconductors, helium) to have the skills to analyze experimental results and extract characteristic quantities.

I - Materials at low temperatures (A. Sulpice): duration 10h

Thermal and electrical properties of metals and insulators: specific heat, thermal expansion, electrical resistivity, thermal conduction.

II. Superconductivity (O. Buisson): duration 10h

1) Introduction:
Experimental facts : perfect conductivity, Meissner Effect
2) Macroscopic quantum model
London theory
critical current of a superconducting wire
problems of nucleation
type II superconductivity: the vortex.
3) Quantum effects:
Josephson effect
