Goals

Materials selection has become a fundamental issue for components. The main objective of this course is that at the end a student is capable to identify and justify the choice of materials found in the basic electronic and optoelectronic components.

Chapter 1 : Generalities on materials met in components

  • Materials in components: a key issue
  • Semiconductors
  • Semiconductors substrates and hetero-epitaxy
  • Junctions: semiconductor / isolator and semiconductor / metal

Chapter 2: Principles and Elaboration methods of materials

  • Elaboration of materials and thermodynamics
  • Physical parameters of material elaboration and obtained structure
  • Crystal growth techniques
  • Thin film elaboration techniques
  • Influence of the growth technique on properties

Chapter 3: Silicon based components.

  • Silicon based and silicon on isolator based components
  • Band gap engineering on Si based components.
  • Thermal oxidation of Silicon
  • Semiconductor / isolator Interface
  • Metal silicides

Chapter 4: Other material components.

  • III-V semiconductor components
  • Wide band gap semiconductors
  • Solar cells (First, Second and Third generation)
  • Superconductors


Prerequisites

Semiconductor physics and solid state physics.

Tests

Written exam (2h).
