This lecture is divided in three parts; the first one is based on the thermodynamic adhesion dealing with the various types of interface boundaries. The second part is relative to the chemistry of surfaces and the main tools of investigation. The third part is relative to real surface which are hydrated and/or oxidised and which exhibit enhanced properties.
