Objectif(s)

Introduction he basic aspects of fracture mechanics, analysis of the stress/strain fields around a pre-existing crack, definition of the loading parameters (energy release rates, stress intensity factor), elasticity, extension to (non linear) elastic-plastic conditions, either confined extended, experimental aspects for fracture characterization, statistical aspects of fracture (Weibull), applications metals, ceramics and polymers.

Learning outcomes

*Loading parameters governing failure
*Local aspects to fracture (cohesive zone models, ductile fracture)
*Experimental characterization
*Perform full analysis of oxidation kinetics with SEM, optical microscope and weighting machine
*Perform mechanical tests (bending and ring compression) and analyse results

Contenu(s)

The course consist of theoretical courses and tutorials on fundamentals in mechanics. Lab work are also performed.
*Courses
*#Basic notions of linear elasticity
*#Basis of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics
*#stress field at crack tip, calculation of stress intensity factors, energy release rate
*#Application to plane stress/plane strain configurations
*#Multi axial loading, triaxiality of stresses
*#Non-linear fracture mechanics
*#Introduction to experimental fracture mechanics (tests – visual fractography -)
*#Microstructural aspects of fracture (brittle, ductile, transgranular, intergranular, inclusions)
*#SEM investigations
*#Local approach to fracture

*Tutorials
*#Case studies of fracture of a vessel subjected to failure
*#Calculations of stress intensity factors and energy release rates.
*#Polymer fracture
*#Analysis of experimental data from fracture
*#Model case of a ductile fracture in rigid perfectly plastic material with cylindrical cavities.

*Labs
This lab is common with the lab of fundamentals in corrosion/oxidation labs. Student are working on the LOCA with Zr4 alloy. They are studying the oxidation kinetics at various temperature and time (using Weight analysis, SEM and optical microscope) and the subsequent mechanical properties after oxidation using bending and ring compression tests. They have to compare their results to published data

Prérequis
