Goals

The goals of this labwork are the following:

  • To introduce the principles underlining the Beam Propagation Method (BPM)
  • Use a commercial software for the design of integrated optical circuits with the BPM method.
  • Propose a detailed study of a device (to be chosen between an integrated sensor, a MMI multiplexer/demultiplexer, an asymmetric Y junction...)

Content

Session 1

  • Description of the BPM method, approximations, trade-offs and domain of applicability to the study of integrated optic devices.
  • Introduction to Optiwave OptiBPM software.

Session 2

  • Group formation (2 or 3 students) and choice of simulation projects.
  • Simulations.

Session 3

  • At this point, each group of students should be acquainted to the theory associated to the chosen project. Bibliographical references will be discussed with the teacher.
  • Simulations.

Session 4

  • Discussions with the teacher concerning the last parts of the projects.
  • Last simulations...

Integrated optics course, dielectric waveguides

Tests

Report to be given 1 week after the last simulation session
