Goal(s)

Acquire basic physical concepts concerning particles with non-zero mass that exhibit quantum behavior.
Apply these concepts to understand the behavior of electrons in solids, thereby opening the door to further study of the subject in the school's electronics-oriented programs (2nd and 3rd years).

Content(s)

CTD:
1. Introduction
Part A: Basic concepts for particles with non-zero mass
2. Schrödinger – Scattering states
3. Bound states – From discrete to continuum
4. Occupation of energy levels
Part B: The electron in solids
5. Perfect electron gas
6. Electrons subjected to a periodic potential
7. Conclusion

A 2-hour supervised exam. No documents are allowed except for 1 handwritten A4 sheet (front and back) and a calculator. Foreign students are allowed to use a dictionary.
Intermediate multiple-choice questions

Practical work:
This cycle consists of 3 practical sessions, which focus on

  • Resistivity. The objective of this practical is to study the experimental methods used to measure this quantity and the parameters that can cause it to vary (presence of impurities, temperature)
  • Transmission lines : standing waves
  • Piezoelectricity. In this practical, we address both aspects of piezoelectricity. The electrical characteristics of materials subjected to deformation are determined in the first part, while the properties of deformation under an electric field are addressed in the second part.
