Goal(s)

The course is organized into two modules, which are assessed separately:

Digital Architecture Module (µProc)
This module presents the general architecture and components of a microprocessor-based system and the principles of low-level C programming.

Design of digital integrated circuits : from MOS transistor to an instruction set interpreter
This module aims at linking several UEs of the 1A program in order to get a coherent overview and globally master the bases of digital microelectronic design. The first part of the module must allow knowing the design and optimization principles of digital CMOS blocks, from transistor-level logic gates up to cells corresponding to major usual functions. The second part of the module must allow understanding the design method of a circuit with a functionality specified by an algorithm, and how to apply this method to an instruction set interpreter (microprocessor).

Content(s)

Digital Architecture Module (µProc)

***************

Design of digital integrated circuits : from MOS transistor to an instruction set interpreter
This module successively addresses:

  • the main characteristics of static CMOS logic
  • the design and optimization of combinatorial functions: CMOS logic gates and arithmetic functions
  • memorization in CMOS : latches, flip-flops, memory blocks
  • the electrical optimization for speed/area/power, from the elementary gate up to a complex circuit: sizing (complements to previous sections), amplifications, distribution trees
  • the synchronous circuits based on a datapath (operative part) and a finite state machine (control part), from dedicated circuits to microprocessors, then the transformation principle into a pipeline architecture.
