Goal(s)

The objective of this course is to discuss the various aspects of the degradation in service of materials within components: mechanical fracture (brutal or progressive), fiability of fabrication processes. An important part of the course is under a practical form, as a failure analysis project.

Content(s)

* Fracture : physics and mechanics (16h)
* Failure analysis & case studies (8h)
* Non Destructive testing (4h)
* Fiability of frabrication processes for microsystems (2h)

* Project (24h) : a project will be carried out by groups of 3 to 4 students on a real engineering failure case study. The objective will be to find out the reasons for the failure and propose some imrpovelments to the design to avoid future similar failures. The laboratories equipments will be available to the students. This work is followed by a tutor.



Prerequisites

Basics of materials mechanics (tensors, elasticity, constitutive laws, plasticity)
Knowledge on the material's microstructures

Test

* Oral presentation on non-destructive testing (90%)
* Written exam for "fracture" and "failure analysis" (10%)
