Goal(s)

Refresher or review (if seen in 1st year) of fundamental concepts in materials science.

Develop the basic concepts in physical chemistry useful for controlling the microstructure of materials during various fabrication processes.

Contact Marion COFFIGNIEZ, Pierre Antoine BONNEFONT, Alexis DESCHAMPS, Guillaume PARRY, Fiqiri HODAJ, Fabien VOLPI, Annie ANTONI

Content(s)

  • Fundamentals (8h):
Refresher: chemical thermodynamics for metals and materials, solutions and equilibria.

Review: In groups of 3 or 4 students, the fundamental concepts are prepared during independent sessions, based on the corresponding 1A Phelma courses. Each group then makes a presentation during oral sessions. Each group must include 3 false notions in its presentation, which must be detected by the other students.

  • Part 1 (20h : 10hCM+10hTD) :
phase equilibria, phase diagrams (binary and ternary systems), predominance area diagrams
  • Part 2 (16h : 8hCM+8hTD):
-basics of phase transformations: driving forces, nucleation, growth, various classes of solid state transformations
  • solidification microstructures : metallic alloys : process parameters, solidification paths (kinetics), microstructures (cells, dendrites, eutectics, peritectics)
