Goal(s)

Develop the basic concepts in physical chemistry useful for controlling the microstructure of materials during various fabrication processes.

  • phases equilibria, phase diagrams (binary and ternary systems), predominance area diagrams
  • basics of phase transformations : driving forces, nucleation, growth, various classes of solid state transformations
  • solidification microstructures :
    • metallic alloys : process parameters, solidification paths (kinetics), microstructures (cells, dendrites, eutectics, peritectics)
    • crystallisation of polymers : Introduction on polymer synthesis, crystallite morphologies, crystallisation kinetics
