Goals

Understand the fundamentals of multimedia information retrieval: the economic challenges, the current state of technology (computer vision, speech processing, data fusion, statistical learning) and the scientific challenges for the future.

  • Introduction: problem, applications
  • Information retrieval (text): concepts, basic principles, latent semantic indexing
  • Evaluation: methodology, main criteria
  • "Signal" vs. "Semantics" Indexing: Issue and Challenge
  • Evolution of architectures with separate modalities (Shape, Color, Texture), with a "bag of visual words" architecture, towards deep learning
  • Similarity Measure: Matching Request - Document
  • Relevance feedback


Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of signal and image processing and data analysis
