Goal(s)

This course in English is a brief introduction to the interdisciplinary field of cognitive sciences. It allows students to become familiar with the key notions of the field and to get an overview of current research in cognitive sciences in Grenoble. In conjunction with the "Research Seminars" module, this course also aims to encourage students to speak and exchange in English in a scientific setting.

Content(s)

This introductory course provides an insight into the historical conditions of the emergence of the concept of "cognition", the definition of the field of study specific to cognitive sciences, its methods of investigation, the specific contribution of various disciplines (Artificial Intelligence, Neuroscience, Psychology, Linguistics, Philosophy) to the study of cognitive phenomena, and the questions that fuel current debates in cognitive science. Key notions such as the modularity of the mind, enaction, embodied cognition, universal grammar, mental representations, computational procedures, cognitivism, connectionism, neural networks, mirror neurons, as well as key paradigms such as the Turing test or the Chinese room are discussed.

Having read the 2 articles provided when registering for the master's degree: Miller (2003) and Chamak (2004)
