Goal(s)

Product lifecycle analysis: from mineral extraction to recycling.

Understand the different stages of a product's life cycle and quantify the impacts (carbon, energy, water) of each stage.

Identify the challenges involved in recycling materials.

Discuss the role of the materials engineer in minimizing impacts.

4x2h lecture + 2h tutorial in computer room

Introduction or review of life cycle analysis, indicators and tools.

Assessment of technological levers for action.

Identification of material challenges linked to the development of a more virtuous material life cycle.

Case studies.



Prerequisites

Fundamentals of materials chemistry, strength of materials, and microstructure-property relationships.

Test

Semester 9 - The exam may be taken in french or in english FR EN

Written exam + Oral defense (combined to "Material selection" project)
