Goal(s)

Addressing the various problems associated with the different alloys (steels, stainless steels and zirconium alloys) used for primary circuit components
stainless steels and zirconium alloys) used for primary circuit components (pressure vessels, internals and fuel cladding in PWRs), without taking into account the effect of irradiation

Content(s)

1) Course
The various structural materials currently used in the primary circuit of nuclear reactors will be described in terms of their nature and microstructures as well as their properties and evolution

  • Steels: classification and names of steels, stainless steels, mechanical properties
  • (corrosion resistance will be covered in the corrosion course)
  • Aluminium and nickel-based alloys, zirconium alloys, graphite
  • Alloy joining methods
    2) Tutorial and project: The multiphase software COMSOL is presented to the students and they have to carry out a project using this software, either on the field or in the field.
    2) Project: The students will be asked to carry out a project using this software, either on the optimisation of the accident tolerant fuel to avoid LOCA type accidents or the optimisation of the PWR vessel material.
    3) Visit: a special visit is organised to FRAMATOME Ugine where Zr cladding is produced
