Content(s)

This lecture introduces the basic concepts of nuclear physics and radiation-matter interactions: different modes of interaction of charged particules with matter (heavy and light charged particles) as well as the interactions of neutral radiations (photons and neutrons) with matter. The bases of radio-protection are also presented, with a description of particle interactions in biological matter and the standard radioprotection units.

I. Basics of nuclear physics

  • Components of Matter and the 4 interactions
  • Concept of special relativity
  • Nucleus properties: Rutherford experiment, radius, density, nuclide chart, binding energy
  • Nuclear models: liquid drop
  • Radioactivity

II. Interaction of charged radiation with matter

  • Charged Particle interacting with matter
  • stopping power of heavy charged particules
  • Stopping power of electron and positron
  • Cerenkov, Transition radiations

III. Interaction of neutral radiations with matter

  • Photon Interacting with matter
    Photoelectric effect
    Compton effect
    Pair production
  • Neutron interacting with matter

IV. Introduction to radio-protection
