Goals
This course aims at giving an introduction to the field of Planar Ligthwave Integrated Circuits. It gives the fundamentals of dielectric waveguides, introduces elementary integrated functions and gives an overview of advanced devices and their realization technologies.

Content I. Introduction: From Colladon's fountain to PLCs, more than one century of technological and scientific evolution.
II. Waveguides: propagation of light in a waveguide, monomode and multimode waveguides, slab and channel wavegujides, Effective Index Method, Designing a Waveguide.
III. Elementary fucnctions: Directional couplers, Y-junction, Interferometer, Resonnators
IV. Overview of advanced devices: Add and Drop Mux, AWG, Bragg grating waveguides etc.
PrerequisitesNotions of geometrical and wave optics. Knowledge of the mathematical formalism of waves (complex exponentials, Maxwell equations)
Tests Semester 8 - The exam is given in english only 
One written exam at the end of the course
