Understand the fundamentals of multimedia information retrieval: the economic challenges, the current state of technology (computer vision, speech processing, data fusion, statistical learning) and the scientific challenges for the future.

- Evaluation: methodology, main criteria
- "Signal" vs. "Semantics" Indexing: Issue and Challenge
- Evolution of architectures with separate modalities (Shape, Color, Texture), with a "bag of visual words" architecture, towards deep learning
